emacs-nox software package provides GNU Emacs editor (metapackage, without X support), you can install in your Debian 9 (Stretch) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install emacs-nox
emacs-nox is installed in your system.
Make ensure the emacs-nox package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep emacs-nox *
You will get with emacs-nox package name, version, architecture and description in a table
